From the Latin words libum (flat bread) and German leben (life), Lebkuchen is a traditional German Christmas cookie similar to gingerbread. Created in the 13th century in a Franconian German monastery, Lebkuchen bakers date back to 1296 in Ulm and 1396 in N?rnberg. The most famous Lebkuchen comes from N?rnberg. The forerunner to Lebkuchen, honey cake is traced back to the Egyptians, Greek and Romans. They believed honey was a gift of the gods and had magical and healing powers. Made especially around the winter solstice is why Lebkuchen is associated with Christmas. A good cure against winter?s depression, eat the spicy Lebkuchen!

Mouth blown and hand painted by Inge Glas in Neustadt bei Coburg, this ornament is approximately 6 1/2" tall.
