The ladybug has evolved into a symbol of good luck. Centuries ago, German farmers were devastated by the loss of their crops to pesky garden bugs called aphids. The farmers? livelihoods were at stake, so they prayed to the Virgin Mary for guidance and answers to their pest problem. The farmers rejoiced as tiny red and black spotted beetles appeared and destroyed the aphids. The beetles saved the crops and the farmers named the helpful beetles ?Marienkafer? or Mary?s beetles, after the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is also known as ?Our Lady? which is how the name ladybugs came to be.

Mouth blown and hand painted by Inge Glas in Neustadt bei Coburg, this ornament is approximately 3 3/4" tall.
